The current chart changes the benchmark

Iberia Club publishes rates by flight, distance and season. Band 5, including Madrid–New York, Boston and Chicago, lists Business Comfort at 40,500 Avios off-peak or 59,000 peak. The old 34,000 benchmark is not the current chart rate. These figures describe an award, not verified seats on a particular date.

Season, sector and cabin

Check Iberia’s own seasonal calendar and the cabin. Band 6 lists 50,500 off-peak Avios in Business Comfort; Band 1 starts at 3,500 in Economy Basic. Exceptions apply and a return costs twice the one-way rate. A Madrid–America figure does not automatically cover the entire journey from Italy.

From Membership Rewards to Avios

Italy’s Amex-to-Iberia ratio is 5:4: 50,000 Membership Rewards produces 40,000 Avios, insufficient by itself for a 40,500 award. Check the shortfall and transfer restrictions. Combine Avios requires an Iberia account at least 90 days old. Preparing accounts in advance avoids an administrative obstacle when booking.

The cost of reaching Madrid

Compare the complete journey with a cash ticket from your home city. Separate tickets add transfers, a possible Madrid overnight and connection buffers. Do not assume protection for independently booked connections. Positioning costs can consume a small Avios saving, especially for two people or with luggage.

Confirm the total before converting

Your quote should include Avios, taxes, surcharges, baggage and change or cancellation rules. Do not assign Iberia a fixed cash surcharge for every route or assume it is always cheaper than BA. Compare equivalent dates and products. The best award reduces the cost of a trip you want and can actually book.
