Map the route before comparing plans

For a city stay, expected usage can come first; for safaris and long transfers, coverage comes first. Ask the eSIM provider which local networks are permitted and check actual locations, not simply the “South Africa” label. Lodge advice can help focus checks but cannot guarantee reception across the route.

Four comparison prices

Saily lists 1 GB for seven days at EUR3.49, 5 GB for 30 days at EUR11.49, 10 GB for 30 days at EUR20.49 and 20 GB for 30 days at EUR32.99. Confirm these observed catalogue prices when buying. For 14 days away, check validity first: the smallest package alone does not cover the whole stay.

A network name is not a guarantee

Vodacom identifies buildings, congestion, maintenance, weather and outages as signal factors. That does not establish that a particular eSIM uses Vodacom; obtain seller confirmation. Avoid relying on continuous reception in parks or reserves. Download documents and maps beforehand and agree communication arrangements for sections without service.

Prepare data and device

Check model compatibility and carrier unlocking. Install while connected, check activation timing and select the travel profile for data. Keep Italian data roaming disabled if you do not intend to use it. Retain APN and network instructions; do not delete the profile as your first fix without checking whether reinstallation is possible.

For work, compare hotspot rules too

Budget for phone and laptop together. Ask about daily thresholds, reduced speed and sharing rules even when labelled unlimited. Check automatic top-ups before authorising them. For an important meeting, consider a second connection verified with the accommodation: brand rankings or extra gigabytes do not replace that practical check.
