The answer first
Flying Blue Family lets a group of up to eight members use their Miles together at no charge: no more than two adults and six children. There is no minimum Miles balance. Balances do not merge automatically; only the Family leader can move Miles from other members into the leader account. Flying Blue also advertises a 25% discount on a reward ticket for a child aged 2–11 travelling with an adult when the ticket is booked on the Air France or KLM website. Pooling and the child discount do different jobs: one changes which account pays, the other changes an eligible reward price.
Set up the group before booking day
A Flying Blue member aged 18 or over can create a Family from their profile on the Air France or KLM site 24 hours after joining the programme. Others join by accepting an invitation. Each person can be in only one Family at a time and remains for at least six months. Decide who should be the leader before inviting members: this is not a joint wallet from which everybody can draw freely.
A transfer is not an instant checkout button
Only the leader can move some or all of a member’s Miles. That member must have belonged to Flying Blue for at least seven days. For the first transfer, Flying Blue requires 72 hours before the Miles reach the account, and transfers are final. Search for the reward and check its conditions first, but do not rely on an instant move to hold a seat seen today. The cover image shows a KLM aircraft at Washington Dulles in 2024; it is no evidence of reward availability.
The 25% is for the child reward ticket
Flying Blue specifies ages 2–11 and travel with an adult. To receive the discount, book through the Air France or KLM website. Do not assume it also reduces the adult ticket, cash charges or a booking through another channel. Check the final Miles and money amounts before confirming.
A teaching calculation, not a fare found
Purely as an illustration: if an adult reward cost 40,000 Miles and the child reward had the same starting price, 25% off would make the child component 30,000 Miles. Together that would be 70,000 Miles before any cash charges. This is not a quote or an available seat. Pooling Family Miles can help pay the total, but does not provide a second 25% price cut.
When to use a Family
It can help when several Flying Blue accounts hold separate balances and one member needs to issue a reward, especially with an eligible child. For imminent travel, the seven-day membership rule and 72-hour first-transfer period may be decisive. Before moving Miles irreversibly, check passenger names, the child’s age, final price and reward conditions on the booking site. No specific seat or fare was verified for this article.
