Before combining balances, count the transactions left

Marriott Bonvoy lets you transfer points to another member without a fee. Staying below the points caps is not enough: the official help page permits at most two transactions per month and six per calendar year, counting sending and receiving together. This matters when a travel companion is topping up your balance for a stay. This guide covers member-to-member transfers, not buying points or converting them to miles. Both accounts must be eligible

Sender and recipient need accounts in good standing, open for at least 30 days with qualifying activity or at least 90 days without it. An account opened yesterday is not enough; the check applies to both parties, not just the sender. Before planning a transfer, check the opening date and activity of each account. The owner sending the points signs in to their account and uses the official tool linked from the help page. Source: Marriott, “Transferring Marriott Bonvoy Points Online”.

Send a hundred thousand, receive five hundred thousand

The annual limits are 100,000 points sent and 500,000 received from other accounts. The minimum transfer and increment are both 1,000 points. These caps do not replace the transaction-count limit. Worked example: if you have already received one transfer this month, you have one monthly transaction left, to send or receive, not two further incoming transfers. Also check how many of your six annual transactions you have used. Miles and Elite Night Credits cannot be transferred between accounts. Source: Marriott limits table and FAQ.

Two balances for a Barcelona weekend: a worked example

This is entirely a worked example, with no observed hotel or rate. Suppose a Barcelona stay quote requires 70,000 points. You have 45,000 and your companion has 30,000. The gap is 70,000 − 45,000 = 25,000. If both accounts and all limits are eligible, a 25,000-point transfer takes your balance to 70,000 and leaves the sender 5,000. Each uses one of their own transactions, one sending and the other receiving. The example establishes no bookable rooms in Barcelona: check the actual quote and stay conditions before moving points. Exact name, membership number and time for crediting

Enter the recipient’s full name and Marriott Bonvoy membership number exactly as shown on their account. Check the amount, keep the confirmation and inspect both balances. The help page says the recipient should see the points within 24 hours and advises contacting support if they are still missing afterwards. Manual assistance is available for online-tool errors and can take up to seven days to process. Do not treat a transfer as a guaranteed instant credit before an award room disappears. When it helps and what it does not provide

The practical use is closing a measured gap for a booking you have already assessed, after checking accounts, caps and timing. Avoid repeated small transfers: they consume transactions even when the points total is low. No transfer fee does not create a room discount; transferred points do not count as Elite Night Credits or towards maintaining Elite status. For a five-night stay, see our separate Marriott guide without assuming that transferring points automatically makes a stay eligible. Source: Marriott FAQ; editorial assessment by SoftLuxNotes.
