Three questions, not one balance

How many miles can I redeem, how far am I from status, and when does the balance expire? These are separate questions. Award miles fund redemptions; Points and Qualifying Points determine Frequent Traveller and Senator, while HON Circle has its own counter. Everyday spending miles do not automatically add to flight status points. Specific exchange mechanisms for eligible products need separate checks.

The calendar-year thresholds

Frequent Traveller requires 650 Points and 325 Qualifying Points; Senator requires 2,000 and 1,000. HON Circle takes 6,000 HON Circle Points. Both thresholds matter for the first two tiers: 1,200 Qualifying Points do not achieve Senator when total Points are also only 1,200. HON earning requires eligible Business or First flights, not Economy or Premium Economy.

Count each segment once

Continental segments earn 20 in Economy, 20 in Premium Economy, 40 in Business and 40 in First; intercontinental values are 60, 80, 200 and 400. Programme regions apply rather than a geographical assumption. A return with one continental Business connection and one intercontinental Business flight each way produces 40 + 200 + 200 + 40 = 480 Points, provided every segment qualifies.

The operator determines the second counter

A flight earning Points does not necessarily earn Qualifying Points. The eligible list includes airlines named by Miles & More, including ITA Airways and selected co-issuing partners. It is neither the whole Star Alliance nor simply airlines owned by Lufthansa. For codeshares, read “operated by” in the booking and retain that information alongside the cabin for checking credits afterwards.

Check mileage expiry separately

Award miles normally last 36 months and expire at quarter-end, with exceptions for eligible status and specific cards. Do not assume a small purchase resets the expiry of the entire balance or apply another country’s card rules to your own product. Check upcoming expiry in the account and the terms of the product you actually hold. A useful redemption reduces the exposed balance without proving the remainder has a new validity period.

Choose the flight before the badge

Build a table of journeys, segments, Points, Qualifying Points, extra cost and extra time against your preferred alternative. Before adding flights near a status threshold, check missing credits and existing bookings. Another connection can improve the counter while worsening the day. The programme is a tool, not an obligation to lengthen every itinerary. Value future benefits conservatively.
