1. Choose the trip
Start with a destination, date window and passenger count. A programme suited to one flexible traveller may not suit a family during school holidays. A concrete goal makes the required balance measurable.
2. Write the budget in money
Banca d’Italia’s budgeting approach starts with income and expenses, including occasional and unexpected costs. Add taxes, hotels, transfers and card fees to the trip budget. Unused points are not money already saved.
3. Understand eligible spending
An accepted payment is not enough. Italian MR rules exclude, among other items, PagoPA, prepaid top-ups and fuel under the stated conditions; refunds reverse points. Check the product before moving bills or purchases to a card.
4. Distinguish points and miles
Loyalty currencies use different units. In Italy, five MR become four British Airways or Iberia Avios, while three MR become two Flying Blue or KrisFlyer miles. Record both the starting and resulting balances, not just the larger number.
5. Search seats for everyone
One award seat does not solve a trip for four. Search with all passengers and check every segment: an itinerary labelled business may contain flights in another cabin. Do not transfer based solely on an offer headline.
6. Compare the whole cost
Deduct taxes and surcharges from the comparable fare and divide by the original points spent. Consider the alternative you would actually buy too. A high list price alone does not measure your real saving.
7. Check timing and reversibility
MR partner transfers cannot be cancelled and must use the holder’s account. Check specific processing times first: seats found today can disappear while you wait. Transferring everything “just in case” can reduce your options.
8. Read each offer
Check market, registration, threshold, cap and dates. Welcome bonuses, transfer bonuses and award discounts do not automatically combine. A guide’s numerical example is not an offer available on your account.
9. Record deadlines
Keep a list of accounts with last qualifying activity, balance validity and voucher deadlines. Distinguish card closure, offer end dates and partner rules. MR use depends on a valid card in good standing: decide what to do with the balance before cancellation.
10. Value simplicity
Unnecessary connections, extra nights or unmanageable rules can make an award less useful than a simple cash ticket. Flexible dates may help the search but guarantee no seats or mathematical doubling of chances. Choose what improves the trip and keeps spending manageable.
