Aeroplan: 5,000-point stopovers and the full cost

5,000 points is a supplement

An eligible international Aeroplan flight reward can include a stop lasting more than 24 hours and up to 45 days for an additional 5,000 points. One stopover is allowed per direction, including one-way travel. This does not buy a complete Business Class flight for 5,000 points: the underlying award still costs points. This guide does not establish availability on specific dates.

Excluded locations and onward departure

The Flight Reward Policy excludes stopovers in Canada, the United States and China. The introductory page names only Canada and the United States; we follow the policy’s fuller exclusion list rather than treating an omission as permission to stop in China. You must resume travel from the city where you arrived. Travelling overland to another departure city is not a permitted open-jaw at the stopover point. Aeroplan and the operating airlines must approve the routing.

Compare complete searches

On the Air Canada website, choose reward travel and Multi-city/Stopover. Enter the departure airport, final destination, stopover city, dates and actual passenger count. For departures from Italy, Germany, Austria or Switzerland, compare two complete quotes with the same origin and desired cabin: without and with the stop. Separate search results are not automatically combinable. Record the second quote’s total rather than only the advertised supplement.

Read cash charges in CAD, not euros

There is no online booking service fee. The Contact Centre charges a non-refundable CAD 30 service fee even if the reservation cannot be completed online. Operators other than Air Canada, Air Canada Express, Air Canada Rouge and Landline trigger a CAD 39 partner booking fee per ticket. Cash amounts are quoted and charged in Canadian dollars; taxes and other charges still matter. Do not automatically attribute these fees to the stopover: compare what was already included in the quote without the stop.

Worked example: the additional budget

Invented figures for illustration, not an offer: suppose the base quote costs 70,000 points per person and the quote with a stopover costs 75,000. For two people the total rises from 140,000 to 150,000 points, an extra 10,000. Two hotel nights at EUR 120, EUR 45 transport and EUR 75 additional expenses total EUR 360 for the shared trip. Keep this EUR 360 separate from points and the difference in flight charges, recorded in CAD. Count the hotel room once and the points supplement once per passenger.

A stopover or a second award?

Compare a third option: two separate awards that deliver the trip you want. Record total points, charges, each segment’s cabin, times, extra nights and the quotes’ change conditions. If the stopover itinerary costs more than the direct comparison beyond the supplement, use the actual difference rather than budgeting solely from the 5,000-point rule. Confirm that the complete itinerary is accepted before booking the hotel. The second city must fit the time you can spend there as well as the points budget.

Before deciding

Save the complete quote and its check time, passenger count, airports, dates, every segment’s cabin, points and the currency of cash charges. For Business throughout, inspect every segment rather than only the result heading. Ask which conditions apply if you change dates or drop the stop.
