Avios or Miles & More: start with the flights you will take

Network before programme

Avios is a currency used by several programmes; Miles & More is a programme with its own miles. For status, this comparison uses British Airways Club and Miles & More, without applying BA rules to Iberia or Qatar. Start with your airports, airlines and routes. ITA officially joined Miles & More on 1 April 2026, a meaningful change for regular ITA travellers.

Thresholds are not directly comparable

British Airways lists 3,500 Tier Points for Bronze, 7,500 for Silver and 20,000 for Gold, collected from 1 April to 31 March. Miles & More Frequent Traveller requires 650 Points, including 325 Qualifying Points, in a calendar year. A smaller number does not mean an easier status: units and earning rules differ. Model the trips you actually intend to take.

A useful balance must be redeemable

For a specific trip, record the issuing programme, date, cabin, mileage and cash component. Compare the whole journey, including connections and flexibility, with a ticket you would actually buy. A large balance does not create an available award seat. Do not transfer points solely because a historic example showed an attractive price.

Check two expiry rules

BA Avios expire after 36 months without qualifying activity; Combine Avios does not restart the clock. Miles & More award miles normally expire after 36 months at quarter-end. Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle protect against ordinary expiry while held. Cards have separate conditions. Set reminders from your actual account, not your last login date.

The practical choice

Choose a programme combining realistic earning with usable awards. Two balances can serve different trips without pursuing two statuses. Assess lounge access, baggage and priority for the specific ticket rather than assigning identical benefits to every tier. The goal is a bookable trip at an acceptable total cost, not the largest numerical balance.
