The programme comes before the card
You do not need a premium card to join Marriott Bonvoy. Separate three questions when comparing payment products: can you earn transferable points, obtain status and actually use the benefits? A yes to the first does not answer the second. Do not assess an Italian card using terms for a Marriott product issued elsewhere.
The Italian conversion is 5:4
The verified Membership Rewards rate is five MR to four Bonvoy points: 100,000 MR become 80,000 Bonvoy. The minimum and increments are five MR; Amex estimates 3–20 business days. The destination account must be yours and conversion is irreversible. Start with an available stay and a points shortfall, rather than transferring everything to display a larger hotel balance.
Gold is a separate benefit
Italian personal Platinum offers enrolment in Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite. The ordinary route requires 25 eligible nights annually. Gold provides a 25% bonus on base points and 2pm late checkout subject to availability. It does not generally guarantee breakfast, lounge access or a suite. Transferring MR does not activate status.
The booking calculation
Compare the cash rate you would actually pay with points, surcharges and cancellation terms. For five consecutive Standard or PointSavers award nights in one booking, Stay for 5, Pay for 4 removes the lowest-points night. Do not automatically apply it to Cash + Points or free-night certificates. Check any premium-room extras separately.
When the fee outweighs the benefit
Personal Platinum normally costs EUR70 monthly, or EUR840 over twelve months. Value only benefits you would use without artificially changing travel plans; do not add unspent points to savings already realised. Avoid counting existing Gold status twice. Before cancelling, check continuity of status obtained through Amex, which can be withdrawn.
