What changed: standard admission is no longer free
Since 5 October 2026, standard admission to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza costs 5 EUR per person, or 3 EUR at the reduced rate. This matters if you are planning a Hamburg walk using an older guide that still describes the terrace as free. The official FAQ gives that date for introducing admission charges. We checked the rules on 19 October. They cover Plaza access, not the purchase of a seat at a concert. Source: official Elbphilharmonie FAQ, Plaza section.
What a family pays
The official page gives children and young people aged 3–17 the reduced 3 EUR price. Children under 3 enter free and need no ticket. A calculation using published rates: two adults and two children aged 10 and 15 pay 5 + 5 + 3 + 3 = 16 EUR for admission. Four family members do not qualify as a tariff group: the 3 EUR group rate starts at 10 participants. For other concession categories, check the evidence required on the official page before choosing the reduced rate. Sources: Plaza page and FAQ.
A €5 credit per purchase, not per ticket
Buying Plaza tickets online through your Elbphilharmonie customer account earns 5 EUR credit per Plaza purchase transaction. It can be used for an online concert-ticket purchase through the same account. If the four admissions in the example are bought in one transaction, the credit is therefore 5 EUR, not 20 EUR. The cash payment for those admissions remains 16 EUR. We do not treat the credit as a promised refund, cash or an immediate price reduction. Without a planned concert, do not automatically count it as savings you can use on this weekend. Source: official FAQ on Plaza admission and using the concert credit.
Already have a concert ticket? Check the hall
Tickets for concerts in the Grand Hall or Recital Hall allow Plaza access from two hours before the event. You do not need another Plaza ticket within that window. The rule does not automatically cover the Kaistudios: their visitors need a separate ticket to visit the Plaza, according to the FAQ. A Plaza-only ticket is also not an HVV public-transport ticket. Check the hall and time printed on the ticket you already hold before buying another admission. Source: official FAQ, Plaza and ticket sections.
Opening hours to put in your itinerary
The Plaza normally opens daily from 10:00 to 24:00, with last admission at 23:30. The official page lists two exceptions: closed throughout 24 December; open 10:00–18:00 on 31 December, with last admission at 17:30. Last entry and closing time are therefore different. For an evening visit, pick a slot that fits the time you want to spend on the terrace and recheck any changes for your day. Source: official Plaza page, regular and special opening times.
Getting up and what you visit
The public viewing platform sits 37 metres above ground on the eighth floor, between the brick base and the glass structure. The outer walkway runs around the building. You can visit with the required ticket without being a hotel guest or attending a concert. Lifts for step-free access and pushchairs are signposted in the main entrance. From the car park, first go to ground level and through the admission checks; there is no direct route from the car park to the Plaza. Sources: Plaza page and official accessibility FAQ.
How to plan the ticket purchase
Open the official Plaza page and follow its ticket link. Check the date, time slot, visitor count and concessions. Tickets can also be bought on site; advance booking lets you choose the intended admission time. The FAQ says purchased Plaza tickets cannot be refunded or exchanged and the operator can restrict entry in overcrowded conditions. Leave a margin before another appointment. Check availability for your chosen day in the ticket shop. Sources: Plaza page and FAQ on admission and ticket conditions.
