The answer: buy the ticket, then request the upgrade
For Finnair flights in the Japan, Singapore and Los Angeles zone, the table lists 40,000 Avios each way for Economy to Business, or 23,000 from Premium Economy. That pays for upgrading an already purchased ticket, not the entire journey, and confirms no available seat. This guide checks the rules as of 19 October 2026. Your particular departure still needs an answer from the official upgrade service. Source: Finnair’s Avios upgrade table, linked below.
Which tickets qualify
The conditions require a confirmed booking and an issued ticket, an AY code and a scheduled flight operated by Finnair. For online or app redemption, the ticket number must begin with 105. Avios upgrades exclude award flights and tickets purchased under Money+Avios offers. Check the operating carrier and ticket type before buying; do not automatically extend these rules to a codeshare. If you would only accept Business, avoid buying Economy in the expectation of a later confirmation. Source: official Finnair upgrade conditions, Avios section.
Milan–Helsinki–Tokyo: calculate each sector
This is an application of the table, with no availability checked: Economy to Business costs 10,000 Avios for Milan–Helsinki and 40,000 for Helsinki–Tokyo. Upgrading both therefore needs 50,000 per person each way, or 100,000 for two people, in addition to the original tickets’ cash cost. If only the long-haul sector matters, it remains 40,000 and the European flight keeps its original cabin. Frankfurt belongs to the 9,000-Avios zone instead, making the same calculation 49,000 rather than 50,000. The sectors determine the total, not a generic «Europe–Japan» figure. The table also lists an additional 1,000 Avios per direction for requests through customer service. Check the complete debit before confirming. Sources: Finnair table and upgrade conditions.
Confirmed or waitlisted: read the status
Sign into Finnair Plus and open the website or app’s Upgrade service, then select the flight. An available upgrade is confirmed immediately; otherwise, you can request the Avios waitlist. The conditions allow joining from 360 days until 50 hours before departure. Avios are deducted when you request it, so a lower balance does not prove confirmation. Waitlist confirmations can start 30 days before departure and run until 48 hours before it, subject to availability. Without confirmation by that deadline, Finnair specifies an Avios refund within 24 hours. Sources: the official upgrade process and conditions.
Check the services as well as the seat
A Business upgrade bought in advance includes the seat and its reservation, priority services and the lounge at the upgraded flight’s departure airport, subject to Finnair’s operational limitations. Airport-purchased upgrades exclude priority services and lounge access. Do not assign two offers the same value before comparing what they include. Avios earning follows the original ticket, whose rules still govern whether you can change or cancel the flight. Before paying, retain the summary showing upgraded sectors, request status, included services and ticket conditions. Sources: Finnair’s official upgrade conditions and instructions.
Economy or Premium Economy? Compare the difference
Purely hypothetical teaching example: if Premium Economy costs 500 EUR more than Economy, while Business upgrades need 23,000 and 40,000 Avios respectively, you pay 500 EUR to save 17,000 Avios. That is approximately 0.0294 EUR per Avios, or 2.94 cents. It is neither an observed fare nor an official points valuation. Consider the comfort of the cabin you would actually fly in if the upgrade did not clear. Finally, compare an already confirmed Business ticket for the same dates and conditions. Cash, points and the risk of remaining in the original cabin are three separate inputs.
