Check the calendar first: thirteen days without trains
The Gornergrat Railway suspends service for construction from 2 to 14 November 2026 inclusive. Do not plan a train ascent on this railway during that window. The operator’s calendar is more precise than a generic description of a year-round attraction. The valley station is opposite Zermatt railway station; the summit viewpoint stands at 3,089 metres. The restart initially brings a longer interval
Until 1 November, the calendar lists departures every 24 minutes from 08:00 and a first train at 07:00. From 15 to 27 November, the interval is 48 minutes from 08:24; the 07:00 first departure is listed only for Monday to Friday. From 28 November to 12 December, the 24-minute interval returns from 08:24. Check the official day’s timetable before fixing connections: these are published operating periods, not a booking or a guaranteed seat. Source: the operator’s calendar.
From November: CHF102 return
The official 2026–2027 price list, June 2026 edition and subject to change, lists Zermatt–Gornergrat adult full fares of CHF132 return and CHF66 one way for May–October. For November 2026–April 2027 it lists CHF102 return and CHF51 one way. The November fare does not cancel the railway closure. Compare the product for your date: a headline “from” price on a sales page is not a quote for that day. Sources: the official price PDF and timetable.
Keep the pass discount separate from the cost of the pass
The ticket page gives Half-Fare Card, GA and Swiss Travel Pass holders a 50% reduction. Applied to the full November return fare, the calculation is 102 × 50% = CHF51. Worked example: two adults with eligible passes would pay CHF102 in total for these two returns, against CHF204 without a reduction. The passes themselves are excluded. This is therefore not a recommendation to buy a pass solely for this outing. Sources: the official ticket product and price list.
A practical decision for a Zermatt visit
If your stay is already fixed between 2 and 14 November, remove this rail ascent from the plan. If dates are flexible, consider the restart from 15 November while allowing for the 48-minute interval: missing a train may affect connections more than in a 24-minute service. Before buying, check the day, complete route, single or return journey, accepted pass and product conditions. For combinations of individual sections, the operator recommends comparing the complete return, which may be cheaper. Sources: timetable and ticket page.
The reflection on the cover is an archive photograph
mendhak’s photograph shows the Matterhorn reflected in Riffelsee on 11 October 2024, in the Gornergrat area rather than from the summit terrace. The bright reflection illustrates the landscape; it does not establish an ice-free lake, accessible paths or clear November weather. The tourism source associates the reflection with calm conditions and summer. The photograph is published under CC BY-SA 2.0, resized and converted to WebP under the same licence.
