The answer: CHF 590 is not the whole journey price

For the season from 5 December 2026 to 9 October 2027, the official manual lists a compulsory CHF 590 Excellence reservation in addition to a first-class ticket. Check the two April and May exclusion periods

Train 903 has no Excellence carriage from 16 April through 2 May 2027 inclusive; train 902 has none from 17 April through 3 May 2027 inclusive. This does not mean every railway service is cancelled. Tickets and reservations have different booking windows

The official booking page states a 93-day advance window for first- and second-class seat reservations. Excellence reservations open from October for the coming season through the following October; tickets become available 180 days before travel. An open booking window does not guarantee a seat. Follow the official “Book now” link, choose Excellence and inspect the calendar for your route. Already have a pass? The reservation remains separate

The FAQ requires a valid first-class travel entitlement for Excellence. The compulsory seat reservation is separate from transport and is not covered by passes. Travellers who already hold a suitable ticket can select “This passenger only needs a seat reservation” in the shop. Check the route, date and class covered by your pass before choosing that option. The useful comparison with first class

The 2027 manual lists CHF 54 for a first- or second-class reservation. Compared with Excellence, the difference is CHF 536 per person, or CHF 1,072 for two. This compares reservation supplements, not complete fares or a cash valuation of the included meal. If the same valid first-class ticket underlies both choices, focus on how much extra you are willing to spend for the Excellence product. What you are choosing

The Excellence page describes a guaranteed window seat, concierge and five-course menu with wine pairing. The class can only be booked for the full St. Moritz–Zermatt route or the reverse. Budget fully, including the cost of a pass

Teaching example, not a quote: assuming a suitable first-class ticket costs CHF 200, the Excellence total would be 200 + 590 = CHF 790 per person, or CHF 1,580 for two. If a valid pass is already purchased, two reservations would instead require new spending of CHF 1,180; the price already paid for that pass still belongs in the overall travel budget. Before paying, save an itemised summary separating ticket, reservation and any further purchases.
