Amex points and business class: calculating net value

Start with an available seat

Choose route, dates and passenger count, then search actual award availability. A business seat on sale does not prove mileage availability. Record each segment’s cabin, points, taxes, surcharges and change and cancellation terms. An old minimum quote for New York or Tokyo is not a current price for the trip you are planning.

Use the right currency

Italian cards normally convert five MR into four British Airways or Iberia Avios, and three MR into two Flying Blue or KrisFlyer miles. Obtaining 80,000 Avios therefore takes 100,000 MR; 80,000 miles at 3:2 take 120,000 MR. Allow for transfer minimums and increments. The airline balance is not the number of Amex points consumed.

One example, two results

Hypothetical example: 100,000 MR become 80,000 Avios and the award also requires EUR300. Against a comparable EUR2,000 business ticket, calculated value is (2,000 − 300) / 100,000 = 1.7 cents per MR. If you would instead buy a EUR900 alternative, the saving against your plan is EUR600, or 0.6 cents per MR. These figures illustrate the method, not bookable availability.

Compare the statement discount

Shop with Points uses EUR0.004 per MR: 100,000 points mean EUR400 off an eligible outstanding balance, not a bank payment. It requires at least 200 MR, an active card in good standing and a sufficient debit balance. Travel may deliver more value, but a usable discount can beat miles without a concrete trip. Include acquisition costs and flexibility in the comparison.

Transfer after checking

Transfers to partners are irreversible and must go to an account in the cardholder’s name. Partner-specific timings are estimates; general rules allow up to 30 business days. Availability can change while you wait. Check final amounts and timings before sending points. Neither a bonus nor an expensive business ticket guarantees good value.
