Amex points: what to check before closing the card

Record the current position

Before requesting closure, record the MR balance, unposted transactions, expected refunds and rewards already requested. Check which Membership Rewards account each card is linked to. The expiry printed on the plastic and cancellation of the account are different events: points depend on account status and programme participation.

Do not assume a grace period

Article 7.1 provides for forfeiture when withdrawing from the card or Club without simultaneously requesting a reward. It also includes an exception for transfer to a new card issued to the same holder within 60 days. This is not unrestricted permission to redeem after closing: ask Amex beforehand whether your circumstances and new card qualify. Issuer cancellation for default can result in losing the balance.

Another card is not enough by itself

Linking cards requires specific conditions: the same holder, currency, Italian issuance, compatible Reward level and good payment standing, with product exclusions. Moving to a cheaper card therefore does not guarantee retention of the balance or functions. Confirm linking and any transfer before cancelling the current product. An Amex logo on a second card is insufficient.

Choose an actual use

Consider a reward, partner transfer or Shop with Points where available on your account. The latter requires at least 200 MR and reduces an eligible debit balance at EUR0.004 per point; it is not withdrawable cash. Partner transfers are irreversible, must use your own account and can take time: general rules allow up to 30 business days, subject to partner-specific timings. Do not leave the choice to the final day.

Check completion

Keep confirmations and transaction references. After an airline transfer, check receipt and record the new validity rules; after a discount, check the actual balance reduction. Reconcile refunds and remaining obligations before closure. Preserving points should not mean keeping an unused expensive card indefinitely.
