One shared balance, separate accounts
Aeroplan lets two to eight family members pool points free while retaining individual accounts. All existing and future points are shared; you cannot contribute only a selected portion. For a family wanting to use balances already earned, this is an alternative to a paid transfer. It creates neither extra points nor available reward seats. Source: the official Family Sharing guide.
How deductions are split between balances
Worked example, not a flight price: balances of 60,000 and 40,000 give the pool 100,000 points. Redeeming 20,000 deducts 12,000 from the first account and 8,000 from the second, proportionally. That leaves 48,000 and 32,000, totalling 80,000. You cannot choose to empty the smaller balance first. The Family Lead assigns contributor-only or contributor-and-redeemer permissions. Agree on these before joining. Source: Aeroplan terms, section 7.
Check access before counting the points
The FAQ requires at least six months of Aeroplan membership and a verified account; the lead must be at least 18. You may belong to only one pool and must have a family relationship, which Aeroplan can request evidence of. Verification includes a mobile number with two-factor authentication and identity verification. For children in Europe, note that Instant Verification for minors is currently limited to Canada and the US, excluding Illinois. Check official alternatives before relying on their points. Three months in, six months before another pool
You may leave only after at least three months. After leaving, you must wait six months before joining or starting another pool. You retain your own remaining points after proportional redemptions. Members with redemption privileges can book for people outside the pool, too. Agree on who may spend: sharing goes beyond displaying a larger total. Sources: Aeroplan terms and FAQ.
What makes the pool useful
First assess who can actually access it, then search the programme with your real dates and passengers. Compare total points and cash charges with your goal.
