Cost per gigabyte is only one measure

Consider an illustrative calculation: 10 GB for €20 or 20 GB for €30. The second has a lower cost per gigabyte but requires spending €10 more. If you expect to use 6 GB, the larger package does not save money. Start with duration, destinations, laptop use and expected consumption. Before adding a purchase, check your existing roaming allowance and whether your phone supports the chosen provider’s eSIM.

Brand labels are insufficient

Airalo no longer means only fixed packages: its US page also lists unlimited plans. Holafly does not mean no hotspot: Japan prepaid, for example, allows 1 GB per day of sharing. Saily also offers more than small allowances: its Japan unlimited plan displays 15 days at US$48.99, with 5 GB daily at full speed and then up to 1 Mbps. These are specific product examples, not conditions to apply automatically to every country.

Make a comparison sheet for each trip

Record included countries, validity, named network, hotspot allowance and any speed-reduction threshold. Add the displayed currency and the total you would pay. A regional plan may simplify an itinerary, but check every stop rather than inferring coverage from the continent’s name. For work, consider an independent fallback and download essential documents. A network list does not establish uninterrupted connectivity everywhere.

Follow the package’s activation policy

Some Airalo packages begin on first supported-network connection and others at installation. Check this before downloading the profile, then select the correct data line and follow the roaming instructions. If your home SIM remains active, check its charges separately. This editorial comparison is based on verifiable conditions. Naming a speed or support winner would require comparable measurements that this guide does not provide.
