Check before buying

An eSIM adds a mobile profile without inserting another physical SIM card. Its practical advantage is preparing connectivity before departure. It does not automatically make roaming free: check your existing carrier’s options first, as your destination may already be included. On iPhone, check for a carrier lock under Settings, General, About. Compatibility also depends on the exact model and the market where it was sold.

Data and time are separate limits

A package described as 5 GB for 30 days, for example, does not provide 5 GB each day. That allowance covers the whole validity period and can run out sooner. “Unlimited” also needs qualification: speeds may fall after a usage threshold. A phone number, calls and texts cannot be inferred from the word eSIM alone.

Installation and activation

Do not apply one activation rule to every provider. Airalo distinguishes packages that start on connecting to a supported network from those that start during installation. Read the activation policy before downloading the profile. Have the instructions and a stable internet connection ready; setting everything up for the first time in a taxi queue creates an avoidable problem.

Manage both lines

Explicitly select the line used for mobile data and follow the plan’s roaming instructions. If you keep your home line active for communications, check its charges separately: a new eSIM does not cancel charges on the old line. Before leaving the airport, try loading a page without Wi-Fi. Keep your hotel address and bookings offline as a useful fallback.
