1. Check the phone

Check the exact model and sales region against the provider’s compatibility list, not just the phone family. Another carrier’s eSIM also requires an unlocked device. On iPhone, find carrier lock under Settings, General, About. Check before buying: payment confirmation does not prove compatibility. Have account access and instructions available on a device you can consult during setup.

2. Read the start rule

Airalo says some packages start at installation and others at first supported connection. Holafly describes destination activation for prepaid plans but warns that some iOS procedures can combine installation and activation. Saily Japan specifies activation on arrival with the line and roaming enabled. These rules differ: follow those attached to your purchase rather than assuming an early download always preserves validity.

3. Select the data line

Give the lines clear names, such as Home and Japan. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and configure roaming according to its provider’s instructions. Manage the home line separately: keeping it active can incur home-carrier charges even when another eSIM supplies internet. If you need calls or texts, check what each line provides and at what cost.

4. Test before leaving the airport

With Wi-Fi off, load a webpage and check the plan’s status and expiry in the app. If it fails, check the selected line, roaming and network instructions before contacting support. Do not assume fixed speeds or continuous reception along the whole route: Saily itself notes dependence on local network partners. Keep bookings and your accommodation address offline so a connection problem does not stop your transfer.
