Avios can enter a booking in different ways. An award flight depends on limited dedicated inventory; using them to discount a paid ticket is a different transaction. Establish the product and terms before comparing numbers. The same programme name does not make the offers equivalent.

The comparison that matters

Place the cash fare, Avios discount and award side by side when available. Keep dates, cabin, baggage and flexibility aligned, with points and money separate. The comparison then shows the balance used and spending avoided without concealing differences between tickets.

Three options in an example

An illustration: €600 cash; alternatively 15,000 Avios plus €500; an award at 40,000 Avios plus €180. The discount avoids €100, about 0.67 euro cents per Avios. The award avoids €420, or 1.05 cents. Moving between them uses another 25,000 Avios to avoid a further €320. These are not fares found.

Let the balance and trip guide the choice

A discount may make sense if it preserves Avios for a more valued use or offers terms better suited to the trip. A higher ratio does not decide everything. Compare the total for everyone travelling and leave budget for the days after arrival.

It also helps to compare the two Avios options directly, alongside comparing each with cash. In the example, would you rather retain 25,000 Avios or avoid another €320? Your balance and planned trips may lead to different answers. Retained Avios do not become cash received. If the terms differ, keep that difference visible instead of hiding it inside one ratio. Two travellers with the same balance may reasonably choose differently.

The final check

A seat for sale is not automatically available as an award. Before transferring points or fixing the itinerary, recheck the actual option and final summary. Good Avios use improves a real journey on terms you are comfortable accepting.
