Keep the trip consistent

Compare the same route, cabin, dates and passenger count, keeping duration and connections visible. A low number means less if it introduces an unplanned overnight stay. Payment, changes and cancellation belong in the comparison too.

When more miles mean less cash

An illustration: 80,000 miles plus €600 versus 105,000 plus €250. The additional 25,000 miles avoid €350, or 1.4 euro cents per incremental mile. That describes these hypothetical options, not a fare found or a universal valuation of the balance.

Keep a clear search record

Record the complete result before changing dates, keeping miles and cash currency separate. Couples should search for both passengers. Side by side, the alternatives reveal whether a premium buys fewer stops, better timings or simply a different option.

The incremental comparison is especially useful when the existing balance covers both options. If more miles need to be acquired, their cost belongs on a separate line and may change the choice. Consider the next journey too: spending more now leaves less flexibility later, without assigning that flexibility a guaranteed monetary value. Record the search time and original currency so a later result can be compared on the same basis.
