The rule that matters

MUNCH offers free admission on the first Wednesday of the month from 18:00 to 21:00, excluding July, August and September. Entry is drop-in: collect your ticket at the museum. Source: the official Visit us page.

The next date after 23 October

Applying the monthly rule to the calendar gives 4 November 2026 as the next first Wednesday. This is a calendar calculation, not a separate event confirmation or reserved admission. Reopen the museum notice before travelling: the rule may change. Do not extend free entry to other Wednesdays.

The comparison for two adults

Standard adult admission is 220 NOK; two full-price tickets total 440 NOK. Source: MUNCH’s price list. This comparison covers admission only: it is not a price converted to euros and excludes transport, meals and shopping. Check any personal concessions against the appropriate category in the official ticket shop.

When paying can still make sense

The decision is about more than saving money. A free evening fits well if the museum is already on your route; less so if you must change a flight or add a night. Teaching example: extra travel costs above 440 NOK would erase the benefit of the two full-price admissions. This is a comparison threshold, not an observed travel fare. Also weigh the freedom to choose your time of day and how long you want to spend with the works.

Regular hours and exceptions

Regular hours are 10:00–18:00 Sunday to Tuesday and 10:00–21:00 Wednesday to Saturday. The official hours page also lists exceptions for 2026, which override the weekly timetable. A normal evening closing time does not establish that a special event has identical conditions. Source: MUNCH Opening hours.

Plan before collecting your ticket

For the free evening, first decide which part of the visit matters most to you, then leave room for arrival and ticket collection. Drop-in describes the admission process: it does not promise no queues or unlimited capacity. Avoid a tight connection immediately after the museum. If you prefer an unhurried visit, weigh the saving against the flexibility of an ordinary visit. These are practical planning criteria, not forecasts of waiting times.

Three checks before setting out

Reopen Visit us for the free-entry rule, Opening hours for your chosen date, and the exhibitions you want to see on the museum website. For a drop-in evening, do not treat the ordinary sales calendar as proof that free admission is reserved. Keep the travel plan separate from the actual admission ticket: a date in your diary is not a ticket.
