SafeKey with Points: avoiding an unintended redemption

Read before confirming

When SafeKey appears during checkout, distinguish payment verification from any offer to use Membership Rewards. Redemption requires choosing points, entering a discount, checking the MR required and confirming. Do not select it merely because you are looking for the button that finishes authentication.

If you want to pay without points

Continue with ordinary payment without confirming an MR redemption and complete the required security checks. Labels and layout can vary. If the flow is unclear, stop before confirming and ask Amex for guidance. Keeping points does not require disabling payment protection.

Verify any permanent opt-out

The official public instructions checked explain redemption but do not confirm a universal account-menu route for permanently hiding it. We therefore do not present a menu sequence as valid for every account. Ask support whether your profile offers that preference and where to set it. Meanwhile, you can avoid redemption on each purchase.

Check the displayed value

The standard value is EUR0.003 per MR: 10,000 points provide EUR30, with a minimum of 200 points worth EUR0.60. The purchase is charged in full; the separate discount normally takes 3–5 business days. Keep confirmation and check the statement. Do not independently reduce the payment due while waiting for the credit.

If you already confirmed by mistake

Contact Amex promptly with date, merchant, amount and points used, but do not expect guaranteed restoration: the rules exclude MR refunds after confirmation. Cancelling or returning the purchase does not automatically undo the points discount. Keep evidence if you identify a posting error so it can be checked. A requested discount is different from an unauthorised purchase.
