The number to check

As checked on 20 September 2026, SafeKey with Points normally gives EUR3 per 1,000 MR, or 0.3 cents each. Shop with Points gives EUR4, or 0.4 cents each. Do not confuse redemption during online checkout with a request in your Amex account. Assess any specific promotion using the terms shown when choosing.

Compare the same balance

For 100,000 MR, the standard comparison is EUR300 through SafeKey versus EUR400 through Shop: a EUR100 difference. SafeKey gives 25% less than Shop; Shop gives roughly 33.3% more than SafeKey. The percentage bases differ. This assumes you can actually use the selected discount and meet its conditions.

The purchase is still charged

SafeKey does not reduce the merchant charge: the full purchase is billed and the discount appears separately, normally after 3–5 business days. At least 200 MR and a valid card in good standing are required. You remain responsible for paying the statement when due; do not assume the request and credit happen together.

Confirmation spends the points

The rules provide no MR refund after discount confirmation. A later purchase refund does not automatically restore points; the account discount remains under its conditions. Read the points quantity and euro amount before confirming. SafeKey payment protection is separate from the optional MR redemption.

What about business class?

An airline transfer may deliver more value, but needs available seats and a comparison after taxes and costs. Promising five or ten cents for every MR, or claiming thousands of euros are automatically “lost” by choosing a discount, is misleading. Partner transfers are irreversible. Choose between options you can really use, based on the trip and your budget.
