Do not start from an expired promise

Searching for a card to earn new Volare points links current products to a closed programme. Volare ended on 30 March 2026 and residual use on 30 June. Old welcome thresholds and Tokyo examples are not current targets. Start with your intended trip and the programme that can actually issue the award.

The simulator is not a mileage account

ITA Amex cards use Spend & Reward: simulator units calculate a euro credit. A Gold example with EUR1,300 in eligible ordinary purchases and EUR200 in ITA ticket purchases gives 1,625 + 550 = 2,175 units, or EUR10.875 before rounding at crediting. These are not 2,175 points available for an award flight.

Which spending counts

Do not apply the calculation to every transaction: fuel, cash withdrawals, fees and transactions such as PagoPA are excluded. Refunds reduce eligible spending. Check statement and simulator categories, separating expected credits from received credits. Money spent is not a saving merely because it generates units.

For ITA, look at Miles & More

ITA flights participate in Miles & More; award miles and status Points are separate balances. For a linked card, check which balance it earns, exclusions and cost. Card spending is not automatically status-qualifying, and an Italian Amex does not automatically provide direct Miles & More transfers.

Flexibility within a spending limit

Membership Rewards offers several partners: the Italian catalogue lists British Airways and Iberia at 5:4, Flying Blue at 3:2. The ratio alone does not establish value: availability, surcharges and change rules matter. Compare everything with the card fee and spending you would incur anyway; no bonus justifies an unnecessary purchase.
